5 Reasons You Should Ride a Bike in Lodi

This guest blog was written by Kathryn Siddle, Chair of Bike Lodi. Bike Lodi was established in 2015 as part of the Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Tourism Vision Action Team. The organization’s mission is to, “educate and advocate for the safe use of bicycles as a viable and sustainable means of transportation and enjoyment.”

Regardless if you are a serious road bike enthusiast, an around-the-town cruiser or somewhere in between, Lodi has a ride on wheels for you! The view from a bicycle is unique. Your senses are alive with the beauty of the vineyards up close and unobstructed. On a bike, you’ll hear the birds, admire the views, and feel the breeze. On a clear day, you can see the Sierra Nevadas to the east and Mount Diablo to the west. These are visceral sensations that won’t occur in a vehicle. Lodi offers the opportunity to combine adventure with traveling. Here are the top 5 reasons to come to Lodi and pedal around!

1) BIKE ROUTES APLENTY

Lodi offers many attractions and most are an enjoyable bicycle ride away. Bike Lodi, a local advocacy group, has developed over 20 self-guided routes with something for everyone. Looking to explore a neighboring vineyard? The 30 mile round trip to Consumnes River Farm for wine, olive oil and vinegar tasting is an enchanting ride and a great place for lunch! Wanting to stay a little closer to town? The 10 mile ride out to Phillips Farm Cafe is a beautiful ride and wonderful meal destination. Even closer is the 7 mile ride to Oak Farm with their spectacular vistas and wines. Each route is thoughtfully and carefully designed by local bike riders. They are the safest routes with restaurants, wineries, attractions and bathroom stops included.

2) FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Cycling is an activity for ALL ages. Treat the kids and the grandparents to a bike ride to Lodi Lake. Explore the Wilderness Area, hit the playground, take a paddle on the lake, or just watch the wildlife. It’s a great way to spend the day and fun way to get there.

3) LUNCH AND WINE DOWNTOWN

Riding the cruisers to downtown Lodi for lunch and a glass of wine is a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. When pedaling down Lodi’s shady streets, the trees, architecture and the homey feeling of Lodi truly comes alive. No need to worry about a parking spot or time limit, there’s always front row parking for your bikes!

4) PERFECT LOCATION

Lodi is FLAT and we have miles of bike-friendly roads with multiple opportunities for wine tasting, picnicking and wilderness viewing. Bicycling is a great way to see Lodi and the surrounding area. It allows you to experience our neighborhoods rather than rushing through them.

5) MAKES YOU HAPPY

Biking makes you happy! Numerous studies have shown that daily exercise can reduce stress, alleviate symptoms of depression, improve sleep patterns, and reduce anxiety. It’s a social activity that gives you a chance to connect with your surroundings and others who are out biking and walking. In Lodi, a bicycle is the perfect transportation option to experience all we have to offer. From wine tasting, to enjoying the outdoors, to a restaurant destination – you can’t beat the seat of a bicycle!

We’ve gotten it all wrong about Lodi wine

Before I moved to California to begin my job with The Chronicle, I didn’t know much about Lodi wine — and I honestly didn’t think there was much to know. My only real exposure to the region came while working at an East Coast wine shop; the Lodi wines we sold there were cheap, jammy and sickly sweet.Oh, but how wrong I was. Discovering the wines of Lodi has truly been one of the great pleasures of my job over the last few years.
